  • The first mention of this meetinghouse in town records occurs in 1712. Originally part of Dover, at this time the Newington area was known as Bloody Point. Their village petitioned the Provincial Council in Portsmouth to be made an independent parish, citing that they were too remote from the established place of worship, & had already erected a meetinghouse.
There are indications that the meetinghouse included a belfry early on, incuding 1744 records that the meetinghouse & bell were struck by lightning, with a new belfry raised by the committee in 1751.However, lightning struck the meetinghouse steeple again in 1757. The old steeple was finally taken down in 1798 & a new one built, complete with a spindle & weathercock.
The original bell which hung in the belfry was a gift of the people of Newington, England, now a part of the city of London. In 1804, the church bell cracked, & the defective bell was loaded onto a cart & hauled by oxen to the shop of Paul Revere & Son in Boston, later replaced by a bell that had originally been intended for Pembroke, MA.

This meetinghouse is a contributing property to the Newington Centre Historic District, a US Historic District, & is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
